Athi-Patra Ruga’s Utopia

London’s Somerset House and 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair will be presenting the rarely seen works from South African artist Athi-Patra Ruga this October.

As a part of the Charles Russell Speechlys Terrace Rooms Series’ free exhibitions, Of Gods, Rainbows And Omissions exhibition is, Ruga’s first major solo exhibition in the UK. Ruga looks at a mythical world in the post-apartheid era, challenges cultural identity and parodies the construction of South African nation.

Ruga was born in Umtata, South Africa. During his career, he created avatars and characters through which he addresses ideologies, social and state structures, gender inequalities. This also allowed and empowered him to challenge complex issues of his own nation. His diverse art practice includes film, photography, beautifully hand crafted tapestry and sculpture.
